I was born in Cranfield, Beds. in Merchant Lane just across the road from the RAF airfield. Our house was in line with the runway. About 1944 we had to move out because they took six houses down, following an accident when an aircraft took one house roof off. Another accident occurred when one aircraft was taking off and another light plane was landing in an emergency, from the opposite direction. These accidents led to the loss of our house so that the approach was safer.
