On July10th 1943 when the allies landed in Sicily (operation Husky)I was serving as a Telegraphist aboard the tribal class destroyer H.M.S. Tartar, which was initially engaged in shelling enemy positions in the Syracuse area with her 4.7" armanants.
Late in the evening when the fully illuminated hospitopl ship Talamba was laying off the invasion shipping she was bombed and left in a sinking condition the Tartar's C.O. Commander St J.R.Tyrwhitt, was to take off any surviors.
Closing the Talamba bow-to-bow The Tatar rescued patients, medical staff and members of the ship's company ,eventually transferring them to another ship.
I understand that the others had been caught below deck's and could not be brought off before the Talamba sank but I have never seen an official report or record of the incident, perhaps someone can throw some light on this incident for me
