At the start of the war I was 16 and working as a messenger for the ARP, but later I became part of the rescue squad.
We had our headquarters in the ‘White Lion’ pub in rooms out the back which have since been pulled down.
We had bunks there and we met about twice a week in rotation. At the end of our shift we’d go off to our day jobs.
The wardens were also at the ‘White Lion’. They’d be out each night checking that the blackout was being enforced.
I remember one night when Elmsett was bombed, a group of 8 — 10 of us were called out about midnight. Several houses were on fire and we were there all night and all of the next day until 8pm. About a dozen were killed.
