I joined the Army, the Royal Irish Fusiliers, when I was seventeen and a half, in 1936. After twelve weeks training we were kitted out in tropical gear and sent off to the Middle East, Palestine. Our job was to patrol the frontier with Syria, and to hunt bandits. In 1938 all of a sudden we were called back to base. Most of battalion were moved straight away to Malta. Our company waited for relief from the Queen's Royal West Kent Battalion until December '38. We finally headed for Malta in January '39.
