I was about 10 years old, and my Dad was in the `Home Guard`, I was in a neighbours shelter as bombs were being dropped, we later herd word "haw haw" (Germany calling)on the Radio saying that the Germans had bombed the famous River Tyne, but in fact they where no where near and their bombs had hit the coast road instead, The next day us children went out to see all the craters in the road and you could smell the gun powder.

Another time my Dad told me that they had shot a German parachuting down behind the Rising Sun Colliery

I can also remember another night raid when me and my Mam and neighbours ran to the shelter when we found out that my Mams friend had been killed running to her shelter with the twin baby鈥檚, and the mother of the twin baby鈥檚 was saved because she had gone back into the house to collect bottles of milk for the twins. Very sad that night.

If a raid went on through the night you didn't have to go to school the next day - which we thought was great.
