My husband Len and I were married the day before war was declared.We were Mancunians and suffered many bombings later.
On the night of the Manchester Blitz in December 1940 we were having tea with some friends when the bombing started.
My host, husband and brother put out incediaries in the garden. I was expecting my first child in the following April and I was put in a bedroom to rest.
What a hope! I had an excited 17-year-old brother who kept opening the bedroom door to give me a running commentary on all that was happening, such as "They are at it again" and "This time Murial they have burnt the cinema down"
Later, after managing to have a few hours sleep, we walked through the Manchester streets seeing the devastation.
Most of the lovely old buildings were down. It was heartbreaking to see.
Next day on the Monday, my husband went to collect my watch which I had taken to be repaired at the jeweller. When he came home he said "Sorry, love, the shop wasn't there," but a few days later I received my watch back, but it was only the charred remains, and I still have it.
Nobody who hasn't gone through experiences like this can imagine what we suffered.
Every time I heard a siren after that I felt faint with fear.
Happily my baby Christine, was born healthy and has proved a wonderful daughter. Some five years ago Christine, who is a trained caterer, arranged my 90th. birthday party which was a great success.
