This story is my earliest memory. I remember being in my pushchair, my Mother pushing me up the hill near our home in Sussex. She suddenly grabbed me out of the pushchair and ran up the hill and into our next door neighbour鈥檚 house where we all sat under the table. Some years later she told me that a German plane was overhead, so low that she could see the pilot. During this period autumn 1942 German pilots were carrying out daylight raids on London and dumping their bombs in the countryside before flying across the channel. In October 1942 they dropped bombs onto our Boys School, which was totally destroyed and 23 boys, 3 teachers were killed. A whole generation gone.
