I was 6 or 7 years old and living in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. One day at Castle Field Primary School during play time I heard the engine of a V2 Rocket coming over. Having known the danger as soon as the engine cut out from my father who was an Air Raid Warden with Civil Defence, I said to my friend 'I think we'd better get down and lay on the ground'.
Just then the Headmaster, Mr Woodley, ran into the play ground blowing his whistle and shouting 'Everyone get down!'. Every child obeyed immediately.
I heard the rocket go overhead followed by a loud explosion. All the glass from the windows of the school that faced the explosion were blown out and we were all covered in shattered glass.
We were told to lay still and not to move even a finger. Within ten minutes a Crash Tender from the local airbase turned up and removed all the broken glass and, miraculously, no one was badly injured.
I had a few cuts on the back of my hand but was ok.
