During the war Mary trained as a wireless operator. This would mean that she could be taken to places all over the country and intercept radio frequences from all over the world. This message gathering from the radio was done in secret, so therefore if a message was missed it could not be heard again because the people who were sending these messages did not know that people like mary were intercepting them and using them for their country.
Mary believes that in organising this secret organisation, this aided Churchill in winning the war.
Once Mary had been trained in London she was moved to Shropshire, she recalls the feeling that it felt as though war was not happening because it was so beautiful and quiet here. At this point Mary could be working at any hours during the day or night because messages were coming in from around the world 24 hours a day.
It was at this time that Mary met her husband Geoff, because the old rectory which was converted into a radio station for them to work in had a garden and this was where the navy came and built a camp.
Mary and Geoff met as they would get together for dances and social events on an evening. Mary and Geoff married just after VE Day.
