I was aged 6 - 7 years staying with my grandparents, taking my ration book, having 1 egg,a small piece of cheese,1 slice of bacon if you were lucky - 1 samll sausage. My grandfather had a small kitchen garden,so we had plenty of vegetables and eating small tomatoes straight out of the greenhouse. He also had a few chickens and ducks.I also remember my mother and grandmother saving their clothes coupons to buy me a coat - which I hated!
My father was a baker and he was exempt from the services. He did join the home guard and worked with a doctor. We were living in Halesowen near Birmingham at the time.
My mother always knew when there was going to be an air raid,as my father was called out.Sometimes we went to the air raid shelter which was at the bottom of our neighbours garden,it was shared by 3 households.Inside there were bunkbeds, books, tinned foods and games.Sometimes we could not make the shelter,so my mother and I hid underneath our dining table
