This article has been submitted by Joseph Ritson, a volunteer story-gatherer for the 大象传媒 Radio Cumbria CSV Action Desk. The information and the photograph have been supplied by World War Two veteran Mr Pat Kelly from Whitehaven, Cumbria. It is about one of his elder brothers, Henry who served with the Border Regiment during World War Two.
As explained in another article posted to the "People's War" website, Corporal Henry Kelly from Whitehaven, Cumberland (now Cumbria) was one of five siblings who served in the Armed Forces during World War Two (See Article Reference: A3838890). His parents were James and Isabel Kelly, who were living on George Street, Whitehaven during the war years.
Henry served with the Border Regiment in Burma. His Service Number was 3599479. In 1944, he was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in the face of enemy action. Henry's unit had been ordered to withdraw from an upper Tai-wy village in Burma and they went to bring in the body of a scout while under enemy fire.
Henry being awarded the Military Medal was announced in the 'Supplement to the London Gazette' dated 5 October 1944 (Page 4571). On the same page, it was announced that another soldier with the Border Regiment was also awarded the Military Medal. This may have been for the same action. This other Border Regiment soldier was No 2075088 Private William Stevenson from Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.
