One evening in June 1944 several Doodlebugs came over and I took shelter in a friend鈥檚 house. Hearing a large explosion we left to find out what had happened.
Showing early signs of a potential club athlete I overtook everybody including the local ARP Warden and arrived at a house nearby which had been badly damaged and housed the only resident left in the whole street. I jumped over the remains of the hedge and fence and became the only casualty of the night, with a protruding nail through my shoe.
Inside the house in a Morrison shelter was Miss Sherwood and Valley, her dog. Please would you get my fur coat from the wardrobe in the room next door. This on the ground floor! I could see the sky above and from a pile of timber I extracted her coat. I carried her dog, very heavy it was too, to safety. She later gave me as a thank you an engraved signet ring, which I still have.
