During the war from around 1943 to 1945 we were enlisted into the ARP or National Fire Service I (Jim) was the eldest at age 16 and the other 2 were 15.
We carried out numerous jobs for the regular firemen..acting as messengers etc at fires during the Blitz and taking part in 'mock' invasions against canadian troops and our own regular forces.
However, the most notable and memorable thing that we did was to 'man' a reasonably sized Fire station and make it look as though it was a fully functioning station to fool any fifth column agents that were lurking around.
We would report to the station-let ourselves in- and I would contact headquarters by means of the telephone exchange in the station.
There was all the trappings of a REAL fire station...Fire Tender etc and also 22 motor cycles which we sort of 'played with'.
The idea, of course was to fool the enemy and we would stay in the station all night, food having been provided for us by people we never saw and the next morning (having been to bed in the bunk beds provided) we would leave the station as we found it after I had once again contacted Headquarters and reported out.
We did this on quite a number of occasions and always made sure that blackout precautions were strictly adhered to but we were allowed to make a noise - motor bikes etc, to complete the illusion
