War put people into places and situations they never expected.
Betty was lucky enough to meet her husband in the war.
Cooking in the ATS
I was in the ATS until I was demobbed in New Years’ Eve 1946.
I went on a course in Brecon and was the only one out of 16 to get First Class. I got promoted when I got back to camp to two stripes and I was put in charge of the Sergeants’ Mess Cookhouse.
I was in London too for three years stationed at Herne Hill. I had some good times and some bad times but you had to make the best of it. I met my husband in the war. He worked in the dairy on the farm and we got married 16th July 1946. He was a bit disabled in the leg because of a motor bike accident so he didn’t pass for the army. There were some really sad times in London, I can tell you.
