V2s
Joan Wise served in the signals during the war. One day she read on the notice board that she had been posted to Knightsbridge. 鈥淭he Germans had just started sending over V2s. I didn鈥檛 even know they were coming when I arrived in Knightsbridge and was placed in a bedroom on the top floor just behind Harrods. Suddenly in the middle of the night my bed moved quite violently. A V2 had landed very close to us on a bus and had killed everybody. Many of my friends were very upset at the huge number of our casualties and they volunteered to be parachuted into France to work with the Resistance. I was keen to go with them but my French wasn鈥檛 good enough. They were all lucky as they all got out.鈥
鈥淚 too was very lucky as I was due for leave and this coincided with VE day so I had the chance to have a holiday and celebrate the end of the war in Europe. I still had to go back into the army for some months as signal work had to continue but I had had the opportunity to join in the fantastic jubilations that broke out on VE Day.鈥
