One time we were weeding in the cornfield. The foreman came and said 鈥淚鈥檝e brought you this gun.鈥 When we asked him what it was for he said that there were some sheep that kept getting into the far corner of the field and eating the corn. He said that if they came through we were to scare them off. So there we were working and one of us noticed that the sheep had got through into the corner of the field. We had a new girl working with us and she said 鈥渙k, I鈥檒l fire the gun.鈥 Instead of putting it to her shoulder, she just fired it off and landed flat on her back. It didn鈥檛 scare the sheep off, though!

We used to leave home at 6.30 in the morning to cycle off the farm and started work at 7.30. We鈥檇 finish late in the evening and on our way home we鈥檇 often stop off at the pub in Rothwell and all have a pint of beer and have a game of dominoes and then bike home in the blackout. When I think about all the jobs we did during the war it鈥檚 a wonder we didn鈥檛 kill ourselves but we did have some fun and laughs.
