I was in the land army. I joined in April 1940. I was one of the first ones in Newark.
I had one or two near misses during the war. On was on leave for the weekend once when at the last minute the foreman said I couldn鈥檛 go when I wanted. When I did manage to get to Sheffield the day after it had been bombed and where I was supposed to stay was flattened. One day I was picking potatoes in the field and a German plane came over and flew over the field. We could even see the pilot as it climbed and circled around. It dropped bombs about 2 miles away. I also had another near miss with another bomb. I should have been at a dance one night but it was flattened to the floor.
I enjoyed my life in the land army. I learnt a lot about people because before that I had been in domestic service. I would have never known many of the things I do now if I had not been a land girl.
The man we worked for was the Rev. Stanton and also the village Squire. He wasn鈥檛 very nice. My friend鈥檚 husband was supposed to be on leave and she wanted to join him. The Rev wouldn鈥檛 let her go. The leave was then postponed and he still wouldn鈥檛 let her. She disobeyed him however and still went to see her husband. When she returned the Rev. gave her the sack at a minutes notice and she had to leave where she was staying.
