This story was submitted to the people's War site by Louise Angell of the CSV Action desk at 大象传媒 Radio Derby, on behalf of Betty Proudler, The author fully understands the sites terms and conditions.

When I was 8 we were told that Germany had invaded Poland. We had no idea where Poland was so I ran up to the highest point in Sponden, with some friends to see if we could see it! We thought we'd better get some food together so I collected some tins and took them to the play house we had.

Dad was a miner so he didn't have to go off and fight. We had 2 pigs and some chickens. We preserved the eggs in waterglass and when we killed the pigs we kept one for ourselves but had to give the other to the government.
