When I was a youngster in 1940’s a family was billeted with us as evacuees (from North London), as kids we got on very well — the North London family managed to rent a small cottage round the corner from our house — unfortunately when the land mine obliterated the Luton Corporation Bus Garage, their cottage was damaged so badly it could not be lived in, in our house, all windows were blown in and ceiling plaster was brought down in every upstairs room — fortunately, we were in our raid shelter. The north London family had gone for the weekend to their London home — which during all the hostilities was unscathed (not even a flake of paint) — so much for location to a safe place!
