George Crew and Blue Mariners were unlucky enough in being stationed off Lowestoft on the wooden minesweepers, the band had to disband because it was too dangerous to sweep mines in the winter storms but then they reformed in the autumn. George wrote ‘Up Spirits’ which was later pirated by Flannegan and Allen into ‘Hey Neighbour’. He emigrated to New Zealand. On my arrival in Christchurch, the hotel manager button holed me, having visited a sick George daily until he died. ’What did he do in the UK?’ I contacted Jonny Brown in Inventory which prompted an article in Nostalgia.
