As a 14/15-year-old with the dog fights over the area, I used to cycle miles to cut down airmen that were hung in the parachutes in the woods - many of whom were dead. And many times, as the German planes were about to crash land, they opened fire on us villagers.
There was more bombs landed on Portland per square yard than anywhere in England.
As a junior LDV Home Guard my job when a raid was imminent: I had to cycle to the church to toll the bell, which was muffled, to tell the villagers.
