George volunteered for the RAF on 26th May 1941. As he was a practicing optician at the time, his papers stipulated 'Not to be employed other than as pilot or Observer without reference to the Air Ministry.'
George was torpedoed but survived in South Africa and later suffered serious injuries from a plane crash at Palmerno Sicily. During the later part of his convalescence in the UK he met his future wife at The Nuffield Centre in London. She had been seconded to Army Co-operation Command at Bracknell doing back-up intelligence amongst others for 297 Squadron exploits. Fortuitously, she was posted to Uxbridge where George was attending the RAF Hospital in the later stage of his recovery.
Their acquaintance blossomed.
