This story has been added by CSV volunteer Linda Clark on behalf of the author Kenneth H. Rickard. It is an extract from a book he wrote in 2004 called 'St Dennis and Goss Moor', published by Halsgrove of Tiverton, Devon. They fully understand the terms and conditions of the site.
Blackout regulations were introduced in 1939. During darkness all windows had to be completely blacked out. If any light could be seen from the outside the local policeman would remind the occupants of the law.
All vehicles' headlights were covered except for a small slit, street lighting was switched off and cycle lights were banned. Everyone had a torch and shops selling batteries did very well. Danger lurked on the roads and accidents were frequent.
