Fred Fisher, front right, during his time as a foreman at British Rail's Neptune Street Depot (Hull), sometime during the 1950s.
Many people, when asked, would expect the Duke of the Riverside Quay to be a public house somewhere on Hull's extensive waterfront. Not so! The Duke was, in fact, Fred Fisher, son of Master Builder Robert Fisher of Manchester.
Fred was a bass baritone who sang in the Trades & Labour Club (Hull), the Lady Le Gross (Beverley)and the Alexandra Theatre (Hull). His concert party also included; Doris Johnson, Mr Murry, Mr Craven and comedian Wilf Deyes. Fed even had a song written about him, using his nickname - Duke of the Riverside Quay.
The Duke served in France during WW1 and was a member of the Special Police Reserve at Alexandra Dock during WW2.
We would love to here from anyone who has any memories of stories about Fred.
