I lived in Birmingham Conventry with my mother, father and 2 sisters. I was in army camp when the war was going on. One of my sisters was in the royal air force, and the other sister in army camp with me. I did my training in Aldershot barracks, where I was stationed to a different place. My sister was stationed somewhere else. I volunteered to go to Germany (where I was stationed).
In Germany as I carried on in the army, I worked in the military hospital. The part of Germany I worked in was Hamburg. It was really nice because everyone got a long with each other, and was very polite. I was in charge of the dining hall, for the patients that came in from the second word war. So many soldiers came in, and the food wasn鈥檛 enough at all.
I got married in Germany on the 12th September 1947, in a catholic church, by an Irish priest. It was so beautiful because it didn鈥檛 cost much at all, everything was taken care of. I had a friend that made my wedding dress and the bridesmaid dresses, I had another friend that arranged my bouquet of flowers, and it was lovely!

When I was living in Birmingham, so many bombs were dropped every night. I wasn鈥檛 scared at all; all I wanted to do was sleep. When ever the sirens used to go off (which meant that bombs were going to be dropped), my mother used to wake me up to come and hide in the neighbour鈥檚 garden where they had shelters. I got so angry and shouted at her to leave me alone to sleep; I didn鈥檛 care about them much at all. I just put my head underneath my pillow, and she left me alone.
The wars were nice; people used to go to the pubs and were so friendly towards one another.
Rationing was very bad in the war; everyone had to have 2 ounces of butter per person per week, 4 ounces of meat per person per week, and 2 ounces of sugar per person per week. If you had any chickens then you had to give up your eggs, and feed your chickens with corn, so they could produce more. How ever if we got so many coupons then we could get jam, beans, and then swap them. It was luxury for us to have them.

I can remember the sound of the bombs, they were very loud, and made a zzzzzzgh sound before they landed. The doodle bugs were the worst bombs of all because the destroyed and blew up your entire house. Very terrible!
