The blackout was enforced vigorously dad made shutters for the windows but only at the front.
He made a shelter at the end of the garden out of bricks with a concrete roof. There were bunks but we only used the shelter twice.
The railings from the front of the garden were removed and the ones from Birmingham cathedral.
There were coupons for food and clothes, there were bananas once a week and we had ice cream Tuesday lunchtime. We also had eggs preserved in water glass and powdered egg too.
We were evacuated for a month in summer. An old couple took us in and the mice ran about at night. A luxury was pear liqueur but chickens ran on the table while we ate.
There was a shortage of cigarettes
