My Grandad and Uncle Ted lived in Peckham and at the start of the War Ted joined the Fire Service. He was out many nights but Grandad had his dog, Pete, to keep him company.
One night when Ted was on duty Grandad was awoken at 3 a.m. by Pete howling, he went downstairs to try to find out what was wrong. Pete would not be quitened and wandered up and down the hall whining until 5 a.m. when he went back in his basket.
Granddad waited up for Ted to return but it was not until much later in the day a message came to say that Ted was in hospital.
What had happened was that that night there was a big bombing raid and the City was in flames. Ted was among the firemen trying fighting the blazes. At 3.a.m. he went into a burning building to try and rescue a mate and something like a beam fell on him. He did not remember anything else until, wandering on London Bridge, in a daze and injured at 5.a.m., a taxi driver stopped and said "Jump in Mate I'm taking you to hospital."
