I woke up on a grey, drizzly morning and was just getting out of bed when my father -- who had already gone downstairs to make early morning tea -- called upstairs "The invasion's started!!!" My mother said that she had woken up several times during the night and heard wave after wave of planes going over.

hat excitement! What relief that at last invasion day had come! All our thoughts were of joy and certainty that we would win.... I regret to say we thought little of the dangers that our men would face.
