In 1939 I was 6 years old & my father was a territorial soldier. He was sent to France straight away as war was declared. My mother, brother, sister & myself were shortly after bombed out of our house. We moved to Surrey, near Windsor, believing it would be safer & quieter. However we soon realised that there was not a great decrease in explosions & bombs dropping. My Aunt, who lived in Brixton, came to visit as a break from the nightly air raids. She stayed two nights & returned home saying it was quieter & safer in her shelter in London.
Now I believe it must have been the defences around Windsor Castle & the German aircraft following the Thames, that made it so bad.
