I was born in London in 1926 and went to school in HACKNEY, I left school on the 3rd September the day war was declared and I lived in London until I went into the Navy in 1944. Some of my memories are of my Father and Uncle breaking Into a garage to remove cars because a bomb had fallen onto the Top floor of a three story factory and was on fire. The A.F.S. arrived in a London taxi with a water trailer on the back. I remember standing on the top a brick built shelter in the road looking towards the City of London with all the sky very red from the big fires that had been caused by the bombs falling on the city of London. Another night I had been to the cinema and on my way home with my Brother it was about eight o鈥檆lock and very dark because of black out restrictions; when a big piece of metal shrapnel hit the road by the side of us - I touched it And it was very hot and heavy I think it was from a shell fired at the German Planes overhead, near by was a railway line that had Ack-Ack guns Mounted on railway trucks so they could be moved along the lines, the guns made lots of noise and we could here them from our home. We also had an Anderson Shelter at the end of the garden with flowers.
