Towards the end of WW2 and the War in the Far East was dying down my late Mother's Cousins in Australia came to our rescue with monthly food parcels.Imagine my surprise as a teenager in Scotland who'd never seen tinned food other than beans corned beef and soups to suddenly receive things like SPC Peaches an Pears.Steamed puddings, canned lamb and exotic jams !
Ted Arrmstrong was with the Artillery in the AIF and fought the Japanese in New Guinea at a place called Buna He took malaria and was returned home to his sister Marjory Armstrong at "Thandwalla" Tarwin nr. Leongatha. In 1956 I joined BOAC and was able to visit them.Sadly Marjory was burned to death in 1982 in a kitchen accident in her home at Young Street Leongatha.Ted was by this time married and living at 66 Bryson St. Melbourne about 80 miles away he died on of all days the 11th November 1993 at home. They must have spent pounds sending us parcels until Rationing stopped in the UK circa 1952.
The reason for this article is to remind us of what Australia did for us all in WW2.Stimulus for me was when sorting out some items to take to a Car Boot Sale I found my old Stamp Collection from the 40's and found a stamped label from Meeniyan Stores date 1946 July !!After 58 years it brought back a flood of memories.
This might interest some of your Oz viewers I know my Cousin Alistair in Brisbane tunes in now and then.
