In 1940 I was travelling down to London on a train bound for King's Cross station, I was in a long compartment and many of the seats were occupied by soldiers. Their equipment was with them or on the luggage racks. Suddenly a cry went up 'German plane overhead'. In moments windows were opened and every soldier thrust his gun out - ready to try and destroy the enemy.
Fortunately no bombs were dropped and I do not think any soldier fired his gun, but I cannot tell you what a proud feeling we civilians had - we were being protected!
