It was September 15th 1940, the same day as the Battle of Britain, and I was a 17 year old working in Cattistock. We were eating lunch when we heard the Church bells ringing. We weren't expecting to hear this as this was the sign of an invasion. We all rushed outside to see the church tower in flames and the hands of the clock falling to point towards the ground. At this point we realised that there was no invasion and that it was the flames which were making the church bells ring. Although the bells survived, the tower had to be pulled down as it was unsafe. On August 15th 1945, VJ Day, I was married in this same church.
