I was at school during the war, and can remember the V1’s coming over. One day I was on the way to school, and had reached the point of decision when the siren went — should I turn round, or go on to school. I think I went to school. I know I could see the rocket as it passed over.
We used to sleep in the basement at night. I remember one day we heard the alarms and hid under the table. The engine cut out, and it landed at Manor House.
When the V2’s came though it was another matter. There was no warning with them. The first thing you knew was the explosion. We went to Nottingham for the rest of the war.
