I am writing this story about my mother and father who took over a WMCA for service men after we got bombed out in Henry Road in Chelmsford in 1942, it was a happy but also sad times, as i remember my parents in the canteen crying over some of the airmen not returning from flights, my eldest brother ran a dance band and put on dances ever thursday in the WMCA and brought in local girls to dance with the airmen, they were the happy times in my young life but as i have said there were also very sad times.
One of the sad times was the time the germans were machine gunning the Children in the school play ground and returning home to find our house had been bombed flat, my second brother ( three years older than me) were taken to my grand parents in Epping untill my parents had secured a home for us to come back too, we were bombed 19th October 1942 the day before my mothers birthday.
All my family are dead now but the memories are still very vivid in my mind.
Thank you for letting me tell you this story.
I remain yours Truly
Laurie Brewer.
