At the beginning of the war I was 15 years old and living with my family in a back-to-back house in Ladywood. My best friend (Joan Riley) lived nearby with her family. We moved away to Perry Bar but I used to visit Joan. One weekend I called to see her. Her house had been bombed. Joan and her mother had sheltered in the cellar but her elder sister had stayed in the bedroom and had been killed by the bomb. Joan and her mother moved away to relatives but I never knew where and I never saw my best friend again. The bomb also killed two other people who were sheltering in the entry.
