I was six and my sister was ten in September 1939. Shortly after the war started she became unwell and the doctor was called. He said she had a case of German measles whereupon I promptly fainted! It was only many years later that my family realised that the association of 'German' measles and the war against Germany was what had scared me - if the doctor had just referred to the illness as 'measles' I would have been fine. I thought they had literally invaded her body!
