This account was taken by Denis Price of the 大象传媒 People's War Team from Joan Cox at the 大象传媒 Bus, Driffield Showground.

I was nine years old and in the War we lived at Melton Bottoms in a line of four houses. Each one belonged to a farmer. When the sirens went we didn't have a shelter so we crowded into what we called the 'dairy' or 'pantry' which was under the stairs. There was a mattress in there so between us my mother and two sisters and me did manage to get some sleep.
One thing that still bothers me is thunder and lightning. All those bangs and explosions I heard as a child in those days still frighten me even though it was years ago.
