One evening my Mum & Dad and 4 sisters and
1 brother were listening to the wireless.
My mum went out into the Hall at about 8p.m
and she shouted for us to come and have a
look at the ceiling at the top of the stairs
which was glowing red. When we got to the top of the stairs we could see that it was
the glow from the night sky.It was from the
London Docks. We couldn't believe our eyes
as we lived in Wandsworth a long way from
the Docks.
The Tate& Lyle sugar wharf was on fire, the
sugar had melted and ran down the road like
treacle which was all on fire. The was so
intense that it blistered the paint on the
boats the other side of the river. Those
poor firemen must have had an horrendous task trying to put the fire out.
We were all looking out of the window,we
had pulled the blackout curtains back ,and were watching the search lights picking out the planes and the shells exploding, then
all of a sudden the room lit up and I thought we had been hit but my brother Ken
who had put up his arms to stretch had
touched the light switch which put the lights on.My mum said you naughty boy.
It frightened us and we hoped that the
enemy planes hadn't seen the light. We were
also scared to go out the next day in case
the neighbours thought we were spies.
