My father John was in the Navy from the age of 14 on the HMS Courageous which was an early battle ship converted to an aircraft carrier, it was the first Naval ship to be sunk in September 1939, many people died on that ship, but my father survived. He often joked that if he lost sight of the Liver Buildings he鈥檇 never find his way home. One of the stories he used to share with everybody was his idea of getting rid of the U-Boats by spreading green paint over the sea surface, so when the captain put the periscope up, he couldn鈥檛 see through the glass with the paint covering it. So thinking he was under water, he鈥檇 go up a bit further and a bit further and then an anti- aircraft gun could shoot him.
