Thursday, 3rd. May, 1945 .
The previous evening ,members of the
armoured unit had looted the wine cellar of
the house we were in .To-day, a certain amount of looting took place- fowls;pigs and
eggs. I received three bottles of wine from
the house as a gift, but these were not much
use to me , as I was teetotal. But - my
comrades benefitted.
I saw many German soldiers of various
ranks enter the village of Salem in trucks
and on foot. I bought a clock from a young
German girl for some chocolate. We had several good meals from the contents of our
Red Cros parcels. At the time,I noted we were living like lords.
We packed all our kits and said good-bye to our Ukranian comrades. We were
packed on to trucks, and left Salem on a crazy convoy. Anyone who could drive was allowed to take whatever could move on wheels! In the sunshine ,we passed British
infantry,K.O.Y.L.I. (5th. Division) .
This was the road back: as far as
I could check. Schmilan'Mollin;Alt-Moln;
Brietinfelde;Flmen Horst;Schwazenbek;passed
throughLUNEBERG. Saw great bridge which was
completely destroyed. We crossed the River
Elbe by Pontoon bridge .(Tally - Ho ). The
journey was fast, and we reached LUNEBERG at
2000 hours. A diffent picture met our eyes, than when we had passed through previously-every house;every shop and every
window was flying a white flag of surrrender.
We now entered X POW Camp of the
2nd.Army, and within fifty minutes were bathed; deloused and issued with blankets.
We were given a meal with dazzling white bread and soup. Cigarettes and a green envelope were issued. I wrote to my Mother;myAberdeen fiancee--Betty,and my brother Len. White shirt issued. Excellent
bed and a good night's sleep.
Friday,4th.May,1945. Rose 0730.
Wrote mor letters. Cleared out kit. Read papers and magazines, and helped with clerical work. Received new underwear.
Completed registration card. In the evening,
visited the Crusader Cinema, which was showing an amusing film-"Hail The Conquering
Hero". My walking out dress that night was,
fur boots;furjacket;no hat;old trousers,etc.
There were white flags on almost every house.Walked back to Cavalry Barracks .
Heard radio news that North West Germany
had surrendered at 6.30 p.m. .
