This story has been added to the Pewople's War website by CSV Volunteer, Ann Toomey, on behalf of the author Mrs. Freda Cowperthwaite, who understands the terms and conditions of the site.

I was in the RAF from 1939, when I was l9 years old, until the War was over in 1946. I worked on a Fixing Station (this was used before there was Radar) - I was at RAF Colerne, Sometimes I worked in the Operations Room, but mainly on the Fixing Station.

A Fixing Station was used to help pilots who were in trouble - were running short of petrol, or were lost. We would listen to their voice and if their voice grew fainter we knew that they were going further away, if their voice became louder, we knew that they were getting closer to us, we then handed them oiver to the Main station who would take over and bring them in.

I very much enjoyed my life in the services, especially the "square bashing" - marching behind a band.

I also served near Newcastle on Tyne, on the way to Hexham, we used to go dancing in the Oxford Galleries, where they would sometimes have two live bands.
