I was staying with me grandfather in 39 Standen Road, Southfields, Wandsworth. My father was in the navy. We were in the only house that still had gas. The rest had electric. It was VE Day in May 1945. I was six.
I was dressed up as a Chinese man. I had a green hat and a pigtail. (I was handsome then) and black trousers. Me sister Sylvie was dressed up as a Crinoline Lady with the old stuff on it. She won second prize. I won sod all as usual! (Me mum did the best for me. My Dad had tattoos up his arm. One said 鈥淒eath before dishonour鈥. I didn鈥檛 really understand that at the time.) We had a street party, jam sandwiches and stuff like that. I just remember we had something to eat that day.
I don鈥檛 think I really understood that the war had ended.
