This story has been entered on the site by Faye Monaghan on behalf of Gwen and they fully understand the conditions.

She was seven when she was evacuated. When war first broke out the reason why Gwen was evacuated was because her auntie told her mam to send her to go and live with them where she will be safe until the war had finished. So she was evacuated but she was different to most other evacuated children because she was going to stay with a family member though she did not know her very well though. Her auntie lived in Thurnscon in Yorkshire. When she was evacuated she felt very upset because she did not want to leave her mam. She did not understand why she had to leave her. She did not actually understand what was going on, she was only seven and every one acted like nothing was wrong. The days just went by like normal. She still went to school and played out with her friends, so she did not really know that anything was wrong.

She was evacuated only for six months because she did not like being away from her parents. She started to write loads of letters home to her parents begging them to come and take her home. So eventually her mam came to get her. When she got back home she went with her mam went to go and live with her dad. He was working in a place where they built aircraft, which fire bombs. They went to live near him so the whole family would be together. She said she was scared of the bombs when they were coming down, because she never knew where the bombs were going to land and they made a very loud screeching noise that really scared her. Gwen did not think that she would have been evacuated, if her auntie had not told her mam to send her down to go and with them while the war was on.
