On August 14th 2005, Joy Hurd (Parry) suddenly announced - "I remember exactly where I was sixty years ago today!" "John was in the Royal Signals and on embarkation leave before going to Japan"
We had decided to get married before he left, we had been on our honeymoon and were returning to North Wales where I was living at the time. When we reached Chester we were aware of a commotion on the platform. People were milling about, speaking in loud voices and there was a general air of excitment.
Then we saw the placards and the headlines 'The War With Japan Is Over'. Our first reaction was a mixture of relief and jubilation.Thank goodness John wouldn't have to go to the Far East. We stayed on the train and completed our journey to North Wales. Unfortunately, although John did not go to Japan, he was sent to India for two years.
