My mother worked, reading gas meters in the war. Very early one morning with no traffic around, her and her friend were pushing the gas reading equipment in a wheelbarrow and came to the main cross at Irvine. A policeman they knew wouldn't let them cross the street, even though the street was deserted. He said he couldn't tell them why so they duly stood at the side of the street with the policeman and suddenly the king's car came past on the way to Dundonald camp (troops were doing commmando training on Irvine moor). The car was going slow enough for the three of them to get a wave from the king!
