My name is Kathleen Davies, and I鈥檓 82.
I was at the grammar school then. I went there til I was 16. That was in Ashton-under-Lyne in Lancashire.
My husband was at Arnhem. He was a glider pilot. They took soldiers about, you know. He was in the air, and he was shot down. The Americans were there, but they never bothered, they never helped anybody. He always said that. I can鈥檛 remember exactly when it happened. When I met him, (we were at grammar school together), and we got talking, and he told me about how he鈥檇 got shot down. His co-pilot died. There were some Americans, and he said they never helped, or did anything for him. They walked across France, but his co-pilot died. A Dutch doctor helped them. Anyway, he was alright afterwards. His name was John Davies. He was in the RAF, but I can鈥檛 remember which regiment. He didn鈥檛 talk about it, but I found out eventually. He told me eventually.
Anyway, this Dutch doctor drove them across to.. the coast, I think. But the co-pilot died, but John walked, and eventually he got back.
I met him after the war, and we got married.
