I鈥檓 Peggy Wright, and I鈥檓 79.
At the end of the war, I was celebrating in London, with my brother. We went to Buckingham Palace, and the King and Queen came out on the balcony, and the two princesses. The atmosphere was lovely. Everybody was sharing everything, and dancing and singing. We didn鈥檛 get home until four in the morning, and nobody paid anything to get home! Everything was free. And everybody was shaking hands with everybody, and singing. It was really lovely.
We were getting crushed, but it didn鈥檛 matter. We were all laughing and singing and joking.
My brother lived there, so we were visiting him in Twickenham, so he took us to Buckingham Palace, and we sat on Queen Victoria鈥檚 monument. We were surrounded by hundreds. You couldn鈥檛 describe it. You had to be there. The atmosphere was so cheerful and lovely. The Queen was in a beautiful shade of blue, and the two princesses were in blue, and the King was in his naval uniform. We saw Mr Churchill too. He came on the balcony, and they wouldn鈥檛 let him go off! They were cheering him. And we were hugging strangers, and having chocolates and sweets from strangers that we would never see again. It was a fantastic atmosphere.
