In January,1941, as a 15 year old Cadet on his first sea voyage, on an old rust bucket SS Harbury, we had just left the Convoy and were headed west for Baltimore. The Skipper suddenly announced on the tannoy, we are now in AMERICAN waters, "light the ship" -- floodlights came on and the radio operator switched on the radio. The tune was the Andrews Sisters singing "Amapola". After the dark, rough crossing, the effect on an impressionable youth who had just left a beleaguered country was magic. every time I hear that record, and I have it, memories come flooding back. An example of the power of music to stimulate recall!.

Posted on: 28 October 2004 by Martyn Beeny

Dear Sir

I am currently reading for my PhD in History at the University of Kent at Canterbury. My thesis is 'The Role of Popular Music during WWII'.

I was very interested to read your comments about the power of music. I would like to discuss this further with you if you so wish.

You may either leave a message here or write to me at mbeeny@hotmail.com

Thank you

Martyn Beeny
