When the World War II started my Gran was eleven and was still in school. She lived on a farm out in the countryside when the war was on so she didn鈥檛 really know much about it. Food was rationed during the war, but because she lived on the farm her family were able to kill pigs to provide them with meat. A special licence was needed for this and the police came round regularly to see if they still had their licence. There were cows to milk so they could make their own butter and they also had hens and chickens so they had plenty of eggs and chicken to eat. Petrol was rationed during the war and people were only allowed to use cars on farm business. My Gran went to school on the bus to Chester and she and her friends had to take their gaskmasks to school with them just incase. Every night my Gran heard planes going over from or to Liverpool and they had to have blackouts and if there was any light showing there was trouble! Two evacuees that had come from Liverpool called John and Miles who were thirteen and fourteen came to stay with my Gran. They used to like riding round in the field on cart and horses and helping with the jobs when they weren鈥檛 in school. A friend of my grans who was an eighteen year old was killed just two days before the end of the war. During the World War II two prisoners of war came to help on the farm, one Italian and one German. One night a bomb landed in a field across the road and exploded, but did no harm. Once John and Miles had gone my Gran and her family were a bit upset because they had become really good friends. When peace was declared everyone was delighted and relieved. Since my Gran lived out in the countryside, it didn鈥檛 really affect them so they didn鈥檛 do much to celebrate the end of World War II.
